The secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, pointed out that protected horticulture is the best model of agri-food production to face imponderables such as climate change, for which the agency works with national producers to extend the use of technologies innovative solutions that optimize crop productivity.
The federal official met virtually with representatives of the Mexican Association of Protected Horticulture (AMHPAC), to whom he proposed to set up a program that takes as a model the good sustainable agricultural practices developed by the agency to produce healthy, safe and world-class vegetables. .
He stressed that protected horticulture is a pioneer in the adoption of techniques for better water management, such as hydroponics, the use of technology for more efficient fertilization and the management of inputs for pest and disease control.
Derived from the above, he said, Mexico is the world leader in the production and export of tomatoes, and a large part of this product is harvested in protected nurseries in 24 states of the country.
The head of Agriculture commented that it is essential that national and international producers, marketers and consumers of vegetables know the benefits of sustainable practices, as a response to the growing demand of society to have healthy, safe and traceable food within their reach.
He indicated that Agriculture has as a priority that the national market has the best food options produced in Mexico. Our market is as competitive, knowledgeable and demanding as any in the rest of the world, she emphasized.
Villalobos Arámbula invited producers of protected vegetables to maintain the quantity and quality of their harvests, which also allows them to be eligible to market them in Asian and European markets, and to collaborate with the Secretariat in the objective of diversifying markets.
Likewise, he exhorted them to continue working in the area of social responsibility, which allows them to provide decent work to Mexican day laborers and avoid the employment of children, among other items.
In this regard, he reported that Agriculture works with the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) to operate a pilot monitoring program, aimed at verifying that the Mexican agricultural sector complies with the international obligation to guarantee decent employment for agricultural workers.
The president of AMHPAC, Guillermo Jiménez Cárdenas, promised to work in coordination with the federal agency to be the benchmark in the plan to extend the use of good agricultural and sustainable practices to a greater number of horticultural producers.
He specified that the organization has a membership of 282 producing partners, who harvest in more than nine thousand protected hectares, in which one million 181 thousand tons are generated, with an estimated value of more than 900 million dollars.
He indicated that the Association is in negotiations to open the Japanese market to Mexican peppers in the short term, and will maintain its closeness with Agriculture to link up with high-potential markets, such as the Arab one, which mainly imports value-added products.
He added that they also promote the diversification of crops, since currently most of the production is concentrated in tomato, which in addition to supplying the national market, has the United States as its main destination.
Present at the meeting were the director-in-chief of the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, and the general director of Agricultural Promotion, Santiago Argüello Campos.
