Ministry of Defence Russia announced a ceasefire on Saturday (5/3) to allow residents to evacuate from two cities Ukraine surrounded by Russian troops. One of them, including the strategic port city of Mariupol.
“Today, March 5, starting at 10 am Moscow time, the Russian side declared a ceasefire and opened a humanitarian corridor for the exit of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,” the Russian Defense Ministry said according to news agencies. Russia as reported AFPSaturday (5/3/2022).
The ministry clarified that the locations of the humanitarian corridors and exit points have been determined by agreement with the authorities Ukraine.
It is known that Russian troops have been operating in Ukraine since February 24.
The announcement came after Mariupol Mayor Vadim Boychenko said the city was under a “blockade” of Russian troops. He also asked for a humanitarian corridor. Pro-Russian separatist forces and the Russian military have said the city is under siege.
Mariupol, a city of about 450,000 people on the Sea of Azov, is a strategic port city that allows important maritime access. The takeover of the city could link Moscow troops coming from the annexed Crimean peninsula to the Donbas forces controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
Volnovakha is a city of about 20,000 people located near the former Ukrainian front line with Russian-backed separatists, and about 60 kilometers (38 miles) from separatist-held Donetsk.
