Ex-Ukraine professional asks for help from the war

Nine years ago, Sergej Stachowski (36) defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon. Now he has gone to war for Ukraine – and is asking the Swiss for help.

the essentials in brief

  • Former world No. 31 Sergei Stakhovsky goes to war for Ukraine.
  • He tries to get his tennis colleagues behind him.
  • Djokovic contacted the 36-year-old – Federer has yet to reply.

Sergej Stachowski (36) has been called “the guy who beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon” since 2013, as he says himself. In the second round, the Ukrainian bowled out the defending champion.

At the end of January, the former world number 31 ended his tennis career. Less than a month later, he swaps the racquet for a gun. Stakhovsky goes to war for Ukraine. His father and brother work as surgeons and also sleep “in the air raid shelter”, Stachowski told “Sky”.

Stachowski is now trying to get his former tennis colleagues behind him from the Ukraine. «Djokovic sent me a message of support. And we even talked a bit, »says Stachowski to «La Stampa».

He hasn’t had any luck with the other “Big Three” so far. «I also tried to contact Federer and Nadal, but without success. I’m sorry that you prefer to keep quiet, even though I understand you. It’s not their war – but there are great people and I hope the support continues.”

Stachowski recently explained in the “NZZ” that he is not really interested in politics. “But when your country is in danger of being wiped out, that suddenly changes.”

Only at the Stachowskis at home is politics still not an issue. Sergei’s wife is Russian, the couple has three children. “We agreed on it because otherwise we would have ruined our family.”
