Norway and four other member states requested that an emergency meeting be called after the attack on the nuclear power plant.

Video images from the nuclear power plant showed heavy artillery fire Thursday night and Friday night. The plant is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and is located in the town of Enerhodar.

The United States also condemned the attack:

Russia denied responsibility

“This is just another attempt by the Kyiv authorities to create artificial hysteria about what is happening in Ukraine,” said Russia’s UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya.

Nebenzia flatly denied that Russia has attacked the nuclear power plant:

The Russian UN ambassador claimed that the Chernobyl accident also affected Russia and that it is in Russia’s interest to have good nuclear power security.

Ukraine’s UN Ambassador Serhiy Kyslytsia explained to the Security Council what the status of the nuclear power plant is now. He told about damage to several buildings, about broken telephone lines and about the consequences of risking damage to the power plant.

The Ukrainian UN ambassador claims his Russian counterpart “could not possibly be in contact with his authorities” because he continues to “lie in the Security Council about the situation in Ukraine”.

As he spoke, Russia’s UN ambassador shook his head.

At the same time, Kyslytsya assured the Security Council that no changes in the radiation at the nuclear power plant have been observed.

Over the past week, the Security Council has held a number of meetings on the Ukraine situation; both about the humanitarian catastrophe and the attack on the nuclear power plant.

When Russia invaded Ukraine and the war broke out on the night of Thursday 24 February, the Security Council convened an emergency meeting on the Ukraine situation.

Condemns Russia’s actions

Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Russia and Syria voted against the resolution. China, Iran, India and South Africa were among the countries that abstained.

Russia exercised its veto power in the UN Security Council and denied bombing Ukraine. The UN hall became silent when Ukraine asked for silence to remember those who have lost their lives.

After the vote, Kyslytsya was interviewed by VG:

– I want to say, again, that despite the cruel actions of the Putin regime, we still believe that there are people in Russia with the honor intact, the UN ambassador said when asked what he wants to say to the countries that voted no.
