Krefeld/Moenchengladbach With music by Mussorgsky and Beethoven, the orchestra shows solidarity with the people of Ukraine. The benefit concert also features moving music by Ukrainian composer Mikola Lysenko.
(ped) The bass determines the opening theme, because it can best reflect majestic grandeur: “The Great Gate of Kyiv” is one of Viktor Hartmann’s pictures that the composer Modest Mussorgsky wrote in 1874 under the title “Pictures at an Exhibition”. Mussorgsky also implemented the rich ornamentation of the architecture and the ringing from the bell tower as instruments. The movement will be performed on Saturday, March 5th, in a matinee performed at short notice by the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker – as part of a solidarity concert for the Ukraine.

“The events of the war in the Ukraine also deeply shook the Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra. In order to support the local people, a 30-minute solidarity concert was organized at short notice in cooperation with Möbel Schaffrath Mönchengladbach,” says concert dramaturge Eva Ziegelhöfer. “In the short time we have only been able to set it up for Mönchengladbach. Perhaps it will also be possible in Krefeld at a later date.”

In addition to Mussorgsky’s “Gate of Kyiv”, the program also includes the famous, funeral march-like Allegretto from Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. A work by the Ukrainian composer Mikola Lyssenko (1842 – 1912) will also be heard: “La Tristesse”. Lysenko is considered the father of Ukrainian classical music. His elegy for piano is very moving.

The concert will take place under 3G conditions and with free entry. There will be a fundraiser for Ukraine on site.
