The lawyer Juan Carlos Manríquez, defender of the resigned commander in chief of the Army Ricardo Martínez, spoke with Cooperativa in the prelude to his declaration as a defendant before Judge Romy Rutherford, this morning, in the Martial Court facilities at the Palace of Courts. The jurist defended the innocence of the general and insisted on his harsh criticism of the work of the visiting minister. In this line, he revealed that he filed a complaint with the national prosecutor, Jorge Abbott, due to the leaks in the case; he also said that the judge did not authorize his presence during the interrogation; he admitted that the arrest of the uniformed officer “is a possible scenario” -since until now “the technique has been to arrest to investigate, and not to investigate to arrest”-; and emphasized the claim about the type of procedure imposed by the Military Justice, where the same magistrate investigates, adopts resolutions, decides on prosecutions and eventual convictions and penalties. “It is an inconceivable, undue procedural advantage”; a scheme “a little disturbing”, affirmed Manríquez.
