After the short-term cancellation of the home game on Tuesday against Krefeld, the Eissport-Gemeinschaft Diez-Limburg (EGDL) will be on the autobahn twice at the weekend: on Friday the Rockets will be visiting the Hanover Indians, on Sunday the new Oberliga will take place -North Champion Saale Bulls Halle.
Diez-Limburg. The next home game is on Tuesday, March 8th, against the Crocodiles Hamburg at Diezer Heckenweg. The scheduling chaos in the Oberliga Nord, which is solely due to the corona pandemic, is clearly evident in the case of the Rockets when you look at the official schedule on the Internet. Three games are entered there for March 4th: at home against Herford, away in Rostock, away in Hanover. And only the latter game actually takes place. Herford? Was once relocated. Rostock? Has corona. So the guest performance at the legendary Hanoverian horse tower remains. If everything goes according to plan…
How that can work in these times was shown once again on Tuesday when the home game against Krefeld had to be canceled at short notice in the early afternoon. The planned guests had corona cases in the team, the game was canceled accordingly. The health of those involved is the top priority. Even if the EGDL would have liked to play this game against their neighbors in the table, they had figured something out against Krefeld. Instead, it’s now back on the ice at the weekend as a clear outsider.
In Hanover, the Rockets have to deal with the strong fifth-placed team, who still has every chance of working his way up to fourth place. That’s important with a view to the play-offs, because then you would have home advantage in the first round. And with the Indians fans behind you, that’s a clear advantage. How remarkably they think outside the box and put the sport in the foreground became clear during the week: Actually, the Indians would have come to Diez on a special train at the end of last year. This had to be canceled due to corona conditions. When the tickets were returned, the fans from Hanover donated almost 800 euros for the Rockets. An impressive sign of solidarity in a season that has not been easy for sport under Corona conditions.
On Sunday, the EGDL entourage travels to the new champion: With a double-digit win against Herford, the Saale Bulls from Halle secured the championship in the Oberliga Nord early on Tuesday evening. With only six defeats, one of them on the first day of the game in their own arena against newly promoted Essen, the Bulls clinched the title in an impressive manner and secured the best position for the play-offs. For Halle, like all other teams that will make it to the play-offs, it is to be hoped that they will start the hot part of the season in good health. It would not be good for sport if Corona again ensured that qualified teams were torn from their sporting dreams because of the pandemic, as was the case last year.
