Indonesia Joins in Approving UN Resolution to Stop Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

Indonesia along with 140 other countries agreed to a United Nations (UN) resolution asking Russia to stop its attacks on Ukraine.

Voting was taken at the United Nations General Assembly Session for an Emergency Special Session, at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States, Wednesday (2/3) local time. The session was chaired by UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid.

Reported AFPThursday (3/3/2022), the resolution also condemned the policy of Vladimir Putin as the President of Russia to deploy its nuclear forces in a standby position.

The voting moment was broadcast live on the UN YouTube channel. The session was chaired by UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid. Applause thundered, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya stood and applauded, while Russia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vasiliy Nebenzia sat with a mask down to her lips.

The following is a breakdown of the number of countries that approved the UN resolution:
Agreed: 141 countries
Disagree: 5 countries
Not voting: 35 countries

On the screen, it can be seen that Indonesia is one of the 141 countries that have agreed to this resolution. From Southeast Asia, there are also Malaysia, Singapore, Timor Leste, Singapore, to Thailand who also agreed to this resolution. Afghanistan which is now led Taliban also approved this resolution to stop Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The countries that disagree with this resolution are Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea.

Countries that abstain include China, Bolivia, Iran, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, to South Africa.

Hundreds of Thousands of Residents Refuge

The United Nations Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, noted that 835,928 refugees had fled Ukraine since February 24. The refugees have fled Ukraine since Russia began its invasion.

Reporting from CNN, Wednesday (2/3/2022), 453,982 refugees are said to have fled through Poland. Meanwhile, another 116,348 went to Hungary.

UNHCR also noted that another 96,000 people moved to Russia from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions between 18 and 23 February. Both regions are controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

The Kremlin has recognized the two regions as independent states. Russia’s actions are considered contrary to international law.

The Russian military continues to carry out attacks in various parts of Ukraine. A number of areas of Ukraine have been controlled by the Russian military. The most recent area claimed to have been controlled by Russia is the city of Kherson.
