Since March 1st, 2022, the new insurance year applies to e-scooters and mopeds, among other things. Experience has shown that many road users forget to buy a new number plate from their insurance company in good time by March 1st and thus commit a criminal offense if they use the expired number plate on public roads.
On Tuesday, the police already found several violations in the district area.
In Pinneberg, the officers noticed an e-scooter with black license plates (2020) on Elmshorner Straße at 11:30 a.m. After the 26-year-old driver could not provide proof of ownership, the officials seized the small electric vehicle, especially since the driver was not the last registered owner.
At the same time, the police officers stopped a 29-year-old on her e-scooter, to which a sticker from 2021 (blue) was still attached.
In Reuterstraße in Uetersen, a patrol checked an electric scooter at 3:00 p.m. that was illegally on the left cycle path. During the check, the emergency services found a recently expired number plate from 2021 on the 20-year-old’s scooter. The young man had borrowed the scooter from his brother. He was not aware of the expired insurance cover. Both he and his mother, as the owner, are now threatened with criminal proceedings for violating the Compulsory Insurance Act.
In Elmshorn, a patrol from the police highway and district police station stopped an e-scooter with expired insurance plates between 1:20 p.m. and 1:35 p.m. in both Langelohe and Ansgarstraße, prohibited further travel and wrote criminal charges against the driver and owner. The two 14-year-old students then had to push their companions home.
The insurance year for mopeds, mopeds, mopeds and scooters up to a maximum speed of 45 km/h and a displacement of up to 50 ccm always begins on March 1st. The list is not final.
E-scooters (small electric vehicles) also require a corresponding insurance number plate or an insurance sticker.
For the current insurance year 2022, the sticker or the identification lettering is green, for 2023 black and for 2024 blue. The order is consecutive.
Some users forget to renew the insurance cover, which is only valid for one year, or are often unaware of the need for motor vehicle liability insurance.
Driving without current insurance coverage is a criminal offense under the Compulsory Insurance Act, which can be punished with up to one year in prison or a fine. Both the driver and the owner can be prosecuted.
An accident can result in high claims for damages.
The Schleswig-Holstein state police have made a flyer available on their website with the most important rules when using e-scooters:
