DRC: Dénis Mukwege discussed new relations between Panzi Hospital and the University of Lubumbashi on minimal invasive surgery with Professor Kishiba

Two days of conference are planned at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lubumbashi in collaboration with the Panzi Hospital, the Community Medical Center (CMC) and the Free University of Brussels (ULB). Doctor Denis Mukwege, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner is in Lubumbashi to participate.

“The University of Lubumbashi has done us a favor since many of the doctors we use at Panzi Hospital and at the Evangelical University in Central Africa come from this university. Our link with UNILU is historic and we want to strengthen the relationship between the two institutions,” said Dr. Mukwege.

“We want to improve minimally invasive surgery because it is a surgery that has long been considered as that of the rich, but by performing it more and more at Panzi, we realize that, given the situation in low-income countries income where women play a very important role in families, keeping them in hospital for seven days is a waste of time for the family which can also have serious consequences for society. we do minimal invasive surgery, it’s surgery for the same intervention and the patients will only stay two days in the hospital and we have five days to win “explained the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

On March 01, students will follow sessions led by professors, doctors and experts, in particular Dr. Denis Mukwege, who will address the management of traumatic urogenital and lower genito-digestive fistulas.

“These forms of fistulae are part of the genital destruction caused by rape with extreme violence. There will also be the scientific classification of traumatic fistulas on the bodies of babies and children. It will be an essentially scientific conference,” explains Dr. Mukwege’s communications department.

During the first day, medical students at the University of Lubumbashi will attend the live broadcast of a surgical intervention that will be performed from the CMC.
