He is from the Landes, but has been living for three years now in the Tarn. It is in this corner of Occitania that Guena, 38 years old, discovered this method of contraception for men. For two years, he has been wearing at least 15 hours a day, heated thermal briefsa contraceptive technique specially designed for men.
Created in the 80s
“When I arrived in the Tarn, several people I knew wore them, which made me interested in them”. Guéna then contacted the Dr Roger Mieussetandrologist atPaule de Viguier hospital in Toulouse and creator of this process in the 80s. This specialist in male contraception is the only one in France to prescribe heated briefs.
I wondered about my involvement in the contraception of my couple. I said to myself that at some point, we had to share this mental load which is conventionally dedicated to women.
If the adoption in 1967 of the Hey Neuwirth allowed the liberalization of the pill for women, it left aside the question of male contraception as Guillaume Daudin and Stéphane Jourdain very skilfully explain in their book Contracepts – Investigation of the last taboo.
For Guéna, wearing a means of contraception is also to be the spokesperson with his friends and also to participate in the democratization of male contraception.
We took the time to talk about it with my partner, which allowed me to know where she was at, at her level.
The process works after a few months
Today, he is the one who wears contraception in his couple, but everything did not happen overnight, explains Guéna: “My partner was wearing an IUD at the time, we concluded that the period when she would have to remove it, I would bear the burden of contraception alone. It took time to adapt to my thermal briefs, because the process works after a few months for the number of spermatozoa to drop and reach the contraceptive threshold (less than 1 million per ml of sperm)”.
But then concretely how does a thermal contraceptive brief for men work:
This brief has an opening on the front. You put it on like a normal slip and then introduce your penis through the orifice and the skin of the scrotum. By this action, the testicles will rise automatically.
This will lead to a warming of the testicles, which will lead to a “collapse” of sperm production, as specialists say.
Rigorous practice
Guéna wears this method of contraception, between 3 and 5 p.m. per 24-hour period, “it’s a rigorous and strict practice, if you don’t wear it enough during a day, it’s not possible to make up for the hours lost the following days. »
Single digit: 34°C
This is the ideal temperature for sperm production. If the temperature is increased by two degrees, the production of spermatogenesis is cut off.

“At night, wearing briefs isn’t as effective because our body temperature naturally rises under our blanket, so the length of time we wear has to be adjusted,” he says. During sex, it is advisable to remove it for comfort.
Proven effectiveness
According to Dr. Mieusset’s studies, the only cases where this contraception did not work concerned patients who had not followed the protocol to the letter. In addition, every three months, Guéna passes a spermogram in the laboratory to know if he is still at this threshold of sterility.
But what about stopping the slip? Still according to the studies of Dr. Mieusset, the concentration of spermatozoa returns to normal after 3 months.
