Fear of Economic Sanctions, Giant Companies on Ngibrit from Russia

Jakarta

A number of global giant companies one after another began to leave or stop their operations in Russia. This was done in line with increasingly stringent sanctions after President Vladimir Putin ordered an attack on Ukraine.

Take for example the oil and gas giant, Shell, which on Monday (28/2) announced that it would stop all operations in Russia, including the operation of their main liquefied natural gas plant there.

Shell said in a statement that it would exit operations of the Sakhalin 2 LNG plant in which it holds a 27.5% stake, and which is 50% owned and operated by Russian gas giant Gazprom.

Shell said that the decision to exit the joint venture would certainly lead to losses. Because until the end of 2021, Shell still has around US$ 3 billion in non-current assets in this business in Russia.

“We are appalled by the loss of life in Ukraine, which we regret, as a result of this senseless act of military aggression that threatens the security of Europe,” Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden said in a statement. ).

Apart from Shell, there are also a number of oil and gas companies from Europe which have stopped all their operations in Russia. Among them are BP, BASF, Chevron, Engie, ENI, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, OMV, TotalEnergies, Uniper.

It doesn’t stop there, apart from oil and gas sector companies, there are also a number of global giant companies from a number of countries that have also decided to leave Russia.

There are Brewer Carlsberg (CARLb.CO), Japan Tobacco (2914.T) and the beverage company Coca-Cola. Meanwhile there are also shipping companies UPS (UPS.N) and FedEx Corp (FDX.N) which have suspended their services both domestically and abroad in Russia.

Many of the companies exposed to Russia are awaiting further clarity on Western sanctions and assessing the impact of already announced sanctions. It is possible that if conditions worsen, it is possible that a number of these companies will also flee from Russia like the companies above.
