Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas, originaria de Minnesota, United Statesdecided to challenge his 12-year-old son Sivert to stay away from social networks until he turned 18, in exchange he would give him $1,800 (36,630 pesos).
As Lorna Goldstrand told CNN, she was inspired by a challenge called “16 for 16”where a mother would give her daughter $1,600 on her 16th birthday if she stayed away from social media.
Of course, Sivert’s mom changed the challenge by upping it to two years and adding $200 more.
The challenge was not so difficult for Sivert, since at 12 years old he still did not use social networks much and the only app he had on his cell phone was Snapchat, which he deleted a day after installing it.
I wouldn’t say there was a moment where I thought I was about to break the challenge. As he progressed, it was more of a pride thing,” the young man told CNN.
In addition, Sivert relied on the help of his friends to keep him informed of the latest news or trends.
I managed to avoid all the unnecessary drama that was there, “said the young man.
Thanks to this challenge, the young man focused on his grades and the sport, in addition to the financial reward, different universities have offered him a sports scholarship for his great performance in American football.
Lorna says that at first she did not believe that her son would meet the challenge, but when she noticed that he had not used social networks for six months, she began saving in case Sivert managed to win the bet.
It was like I’m not going to break this. I’m proud of him, because there were some times when it was more difficult. I was certain that he would make it,” said Sivert’s mom.
After winning the bet, Sivert bought a cell phone and will open his social mediaalthough he confessed that it has cost him a lot of work to use his mobile device because the apps no longer work as before.
It is fun. I feel like I’m 80 years old. I can’t seem to figure out social media. It’s pretty embarrassing. I’ll be with my friends and they’ll be like, ‘What are you doing?’” Sivert said.
Finally, the money he earned from his mom will be used to buy a television.
