Climbing trees, cycling, gymnastics, running, jumping, hopping – this promotes children’s health and prevents obesity. What is your advice to parents: What is the best way to incorporate exercise into everyday family life?
–
It is best to get children excited about exercise at an early age. In everyday family life, this can already begin in the apartment or in the front yard. You can romp around, do small exercises, there are countless hands-on videos on the Internet. The way to the supermarket can be covered on foot and the way to school can be cycled, stairs are walked. This is free fitness! Above all, I’m a fan of the German club system. Registering early for athletics or swimming also means a group experience that makes a difference. Sport is simply fun together.

Swimming pools that were temporarily closed during the pandemic and sports courses that were canceled have increased the lack of exercise among many children and young people. Even before the pandemic, school enrollment examinations showed that around every tenth i-Dötzchen is overweight. What can schools do to encourage physical activity in children?
–
Of course, physical education is very important. It must not be less, it must be expanded. And please make physical education exciting and varied. I’ll mention the “fit4future” initiative. Families and children, but also schools, can get great suggestions and very specific support here. And: Cooperate with sports clubs! Talk to the local club, overcome bureaucratic difficulties, make sport possible!

Schools are currently faced with the enormous challenge of catching up on learning deficits and at the same time having to absorb the resulting health and psychosocial burdens on the students. Exercise can help children reduce stress and achieve better learning success. Do you have any practical tips for teachers?
–
As mentioned above, the school can expand physical education. Otherwise, breaks are an ideal time for exercise. There should be many offers with a high level of solicitation. Starting with chalk for “Hüppekästchen” up to table tennis tables or basketball baskets. If in doubt, the teachers could also let the students get up for the first few minutes and do a few basic exercises. This is done in China, for example.

Fitness also includes mental fitness, motivation and desire, be it for the next working day or the next lesson. As a competitive athlete, you always had to motivate yourself for training and competitions. Do you have a tip for a motivational boost?
–
I have a tip that might surprise you at first: take a break! After that, you start with renewed energy and all the more desire for the next task. And then it works much better to concentrate. If you practice this a little, consciously build in short rest periods and work consistently after your break, you will usually be finished even faster.
