TIJUANA. – The short film “Leaves of Sauco”, by director Sergio Nolasco, celebrates its 15th selection with the inclusion in the International Independent Film Festival of Ibiza, in Spain, which will take place from March 11 to 20, being the only short film Mexican within the sample reported the Ministry of Economy and Innovation through the Directorate of Creative Industries.
The Cinematography Commission of said Directorate indicated that Nolasco filmed this project in 2019 as part of the first script contest of the FotoFilm Tijuana film and photography festival in alliance with the production company Ingenia Creative and on locations in that border city.
“Elder Leaves” stars Eva Luz Corpus (Mariana) and Jacinto Astiazarán (Silvio), who represent two elderly neighbors who fight daily because of the dry leaves that fall between their homes, without knowing that they will eventually find the reason. reality of its eternal conflicts. The protagonists exist in their own loneliness, in a story about time and how humanity seeks, sometimes unintentionally, social interaction to continue their days.
The project participates in Ibiza in the categories of Best International Short Film and Equal Opportunities, which according to the festival website “promotes mental, physical, social and cultural equality through films of any genre and format.” Other Mexican projects in The selection includes the feature films “Ricochet” by Rodrigo Fiallega in the Human in Focus sections, and “Los Hermosos Vencidos” by Guillermo Margariños in Panorama.
In 2021, the short film participated in the Shorts México and Seattle Latino Film Festivals, in addition to receiving nominations for Best Cinematography for cinematographer Marco Aurelio Célis at the London Shorts, Prague International Indie Film Festival, Moscow Gold Awards (MGA) and finalist in Venice Shorts, from California.
Similarly, the production received honorable mentions at the New Wave Short Film Festival in Germany; at the Paris Film Festival, Roma Short Film Festival and Tokyo International Short Film Festival. It should be noted that Hojas de Sauco won the award for Best Short Film at the Gona Film Awards in India; as well as at the Toronto Indie Filmmakers Festival, in addition to a nomination for Nolasco as Best Director at the Madrid Indie Film Festival. This short film will continue its journey through festivals in Europe and Mexico.
