Professor of UI Criticizes Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs about Russia Vs Ukraine: Nothing Free and Active

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Professor of International Law at the University of Indonesia (UI), Hikmahanto Juwana criticized the attitude of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) regarding the invasion carried out Russia Of Ukraine.

It is known, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a statement “Russian military attacks in Ukraine are unacceptable” on February 25, 2022. For him, the statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the potential to harm Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy.

“This sentence has the potential to harm Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy where Indonesia should not take a position to justify or blame Russia’s actions on the situation in Ukraine,” Hikmahanto told reporters. CNNIndonesia.comSunday (27/2).

Hikmahanto explained that Indonesia’s position in the context of running a free and active policy was to ask all parties to refrain from using violence. If it happens, he said, so that anyone who uses it can stop it.

He also assessed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statement was not in line with President Jokowi’s statement on his official Twitter social media. President Jokowi, he said, was right not to mention the names of the two countries.

It is known, Jokowi stated, “Stop the war. The war torments mankind, and endangers the world.”

“Jokowi’s statement does not at all indicate that Russia is attacking Ukraine or that Ukraine is being attacked (by Russia),” he said.

In addition, Hikmahanto is worried that the statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be perceived by Russia that Indonesia is in the same position as the United States, Britain, Australia and other countries that condemn Russia’s actions. This is because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs uses the term “unacceptable.”

Not only that, another statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Indonesia asked the UN Security Council to take concrete actions so that the situation would not get worse.

He then questioned whether the Foreign Ministry did not realize that asking the UN Security Council for concrete steps was a futile act.

“This is because Russia is a member of the UN Security Council that has veto power. The draft resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also been vetoed,” said Hikmahanto.

As is known, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine on Thursday (24/2).

Shortly after Putin’s statement, a number of explosions began to be heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and the city of Kharkiv. A series of explosions was also heard in Belgorod, Russia, which borders Ukraine.

In response to this, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a 5-point statement regarding the conflict. One of the points of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that the military attack on Ukraine is unacceptable.

In addition, the attack puts people’s lives in grave danger and threatens regional and global peace and stability.

Then, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urged the UN Security Council to take concrete steps to prevent the situation from getting worse.

The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also prepared an evacuation plan for Indonesian citizens in Ukraine.
