Berlin (dpa) – Thousands of people protested in several German cities on Saturday against the Russian attack on Ukraine.
According to the police, there were 5,000 people in Munich alone. In Frankfurt, the police spoke of 6,000 to 7,000 participants in a rally under the motto “Solidarity with Ukraine – Peace in Eastern Europe”. According to the police, almost 4,000 people came together in Düsseldorf in the afternoon.
Rallies, demonstrations and vigils were planned for Saturday in many places in Germany. Until the early evening there were corresponding events in Leipzig, Koblenz, Chemnitz, Hanover, Vechta, Göttingen, Trier, Magdeburg, Jena, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, Freiburg and Mannheim, among others. Several cities also symbolically showed their support for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. In Ludwigsburg, for example, the Ferris wheel shone in yellow and blue in the evening – the national colors of Ukraine. The New Castle in Stuttgart should also be illuminated in these colors again.
Call for vigil
The CDU called for a vigil in Berlin on Saturday evening – for “the heroic struggle for freedom in Ukraine”. The CDU announced on its Twitter account that it should be in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin at 8 p.m. Accordingly, party and parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz, Secretary General Mario Czaja and numerous members of the Union parliamentary group will take part.
Numerous organizations wanted to stage a large demonstration in Berlin on Sunday against Russia’s attack on Ukraine. 20,000 participants are registered with the police from 1:00 p.m. at the Brandenburg Gate and on Straße des 17. Juni.
Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an attack on Ukraine on Thursday morning. Already on Friday, Russian troops advanced to the outskirts of the capital Kiev, which was also shelled from the air. Around 2.8 million people live in Kiev.
