David Moyes confirms that he tried to sign Luis Díaz

This Friday it became known that there was a third team in England that sought to sign Luis Fernando Díaz in the winter market. Before Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur came along there was interest from West Ham United led personally by manager David Moyes.

In statements given to the Daily Mirror, Moyes confirmed that the signing of the Colombian was “quite advanced”. He wanted to get ahead of Liverpool, which in principle would go for the player until June. Klopp would have found out about this movement and that is why he accelerated his operation.

It is true. I spoke with Luis Diaz on the phone and we were quite advanced to sign him. I understand that Liverpool would come for him in the summer and I was going to try to get him in January. I don’t know if the fact that we tried to sign him affected Liverpool’s decision,” Moyes said.

The Scottish coach acknowledged that he saw the signing of the winger close, his conversations with the footballer, his agent and an interpreter had him confident to close the deal before January 31. “We talked to the agent in London and got it going.”

“Then other clubs joined. West Ham were ready to make offers for the right players and sadly we didn’t get there… I really hoped that he would choose us.”complemented the DT.

The whole story ended with Klopp’s call to Diaz in Barranquilla. The player was concentrated with the Colombian National Team and received a call from the German coach. That direct contact led him to decide on the reds, team that bought him for 45 million euros plus 15 in variables.
