The Caennais of Andréas Hountondji will have to regain the efficiency lost against Pau. (©AC / Sport in Caen)
How many times this season have we announced the imminent take-off of the Malherbe Caen Stadium ? How many times have we detected the famous reference match synonymous with click? After the feat in Toulouse, after the draw in numerical inferiority at Auxerre, after the great victory against Ajaccio… But each time, it was a cold shower because the team systematically fell into certain faults.
Counter-performances to put into perspective
Recently at the end of the clear success against Nîmes accompanied by a top-of-the-range performance (the best of the season), the general optimist hovered over d’Ornano: “Now you will see what you will see…” Result : the promise of a good series in the process of hatching made pschitt and the Malherbistes returned from Pau with a new defeat. However, it must be put into perspective because unlike previous setbacks, mainly due to recurring errors by Caen players, the one reported from Béarn did not sum up the face of a match where Caen’s hold on the game had been obvious.
This chronic inconstancy which keeps the club at the bottom of the rankings is really the number 1 problem of the season. Despite extenuating circumstances and in particular all these glitches that have befallen the workforce, it is still difficult to explain this checkered course and difficult to admit that the Blue and Red have not won two consecutive matches since the second day.
What face?
Obviously the question that arises today is legitimate: “What does the Stade Malherbe have in store for us at home against Bastia? “A successful game in line with those made against Guingamp, Ajaccio or Nîmes or a more laborious game like that of Nancy to speak only of the most recent? According to Stéphane Moulin, “against Pau, the team had a first half almost identical to that of Nîmes. He just lacked efficiency but that makes all the difference. With efficiency, it’s a reference half-time, without efficiency, it becomes an ordinary half-time which can even be accused of being bad. »
For some time, we have become more consistent in the game but we have to become more consistent in the regularity of scoring goals. In Pau, we still had 18 shots which is a lot for an away game but only three on target. Anything that happens between the penalty areas only has value if it happens.
Bastia: the same route as Caen
On the way, the two teams had separated by a somewhat hairy draw for the Stade Malherbe as obtained in overtime thanks to a fairly generous penalty. At the time, SC Bastia, which was in its early stages of promotion, was at the bottom of the standings. Since then, the Corsicans have kept pace with Ligue 2 and now occupy the same rank as Caen.
However, the margin with the red zone (as for SM Caen) remains very random. Brouard’s men will therefore travel to Ornano with the aim of taking at least one point and with the idea, in the back of their minds, of repeating the same performance as during their last trip to Normandy. In Le Havre, two weeks ago, they won 4-2 after being down 2-0. Stéphane Moulin did not wait for this result at the Océane stadium to gauge his opponent this evening.
Bastia is a good team which has improved a lot since the arrival of its new coach. They have changed their system but Bastia remains a team loyal to the Corsican teams. When I say that, it’s not pejorative because it’s more of a quality.
Winning at Le Havre in this way is never trivial. “It takes quality and mentality”. And Stéphane Moulin adds: “In the end, Caen and Bastia have a similar course, capable of good things that are not always confirmed. »
Every point is worth gold
In view of the maintenance which remains, for the time being, the priority objective of the two clubs, each point is worth gold but not sure that on the Caen side we are satisfied with a single point. To try to pocket three, the Caennais can count on an almost complete workforce. The news bodes well. Now we have to make it happen with a victory.
