Amoksi installs KPS Regulatory Review Committee

Minister Kenneth Amoksi of Justice and Police has installed the KPS Regulatory Review Committee. During the installation on Thursday 17 February, the minister indicated that an organization stands and falls with good regulations.

“It is the backing of the organization,” says Amoksi. He is also of the opinion that safety institutes should be set up everywhere in the region to meet the requirements of the time. In addition, good regulations are needed to help monitor and guide the legal position of employees. This is also the reason why the minister has chosen to have two members of the Surinamese Police Association (SPB) sit on the committee.

During his business trip to Washington last year, the minister already discussed the revision of the regulations of the Suriname Police Force (KPS). It was then promised that the current regulations would be looked at. The minister informed the committee that the contribution from Washington can also be used. In addition, according to the minister, examples of countries with identical challenges to those of Suriname can also be looked at.

Somai Bieswadath, chairman of the committee, says that setting up this working group is very important, because the current regulations of the Suriname Police Force are already outdated. Among other things, the committee will have to analyze the regulations as they are now. After that, the committee will have to make concrete changes and formulate a draft law. Subsequently, this concept will be presented to the National Assembly for approval. All this must be done within a year. According to the committee chair, interim evaluations and reports will also be submitted to the minister.

According to the secretary of the SPB, Revelino Eijk, the union is represented in the committee to ensure that the regulations that are included do not conflict with agreements that the union has with the employer. It must also be ensured that if new cases are included, the interests of the SPB members are also sufficiently served. He is not only talking about the rights, but also the obligations of the members.

Also on this committee are: B. Somai on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Police as chairman; M. Rommy, on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Police as a member; F. Sharman, on behalf of the Office of the President as a member; H. Tjin Liep Shie, on behalf of the President’s Office as a member; R. Eijk, on behalf of the Surinamese Police Association as a member; S. Badri, on behalf of the Surinamese Police Association as a member; mr. J. Kandhai, on behalf of the Suriname Police Force as a member and R. Apinsa, on behalf of the Vice President’s Office as a member.

Finally, Amoksi has indicated that he has full confidence in the team and does not doubt the expertise of the members.
