Will we see again Alexander Zverev, 3rd in the world and Olympic gold medalist, on a court anytime soon? The question really deserves to be asked.
Engaged in singles and doubles at the Acapulco tournament in Mexico, the German literally freaked out last night. In Zverev’s sights? The referee who he believes caused his loss in doubles.
Lined up alongside the Brazilian Marcelo Melothe German bowed to the pair Glass pool helicopter at the end of the suspense (6-2, 4-6, 10-6). A defeat that had the gift of pissing Zverev off.
Instead of leaving the court quietly and greeting the referee (as tradition dictates), the German settled accounts with the referee, violently and repeatedly tapping his racket against his chair.
And if he only touched the referee’s legs, we doubt that the ATP would allow such behavior to pass. And that despite his status as world number 3, Zverev risks missing a few weeks of competition. He has already been expelled from the tournament by the management.
