Following many other countries, Japan and Australia are also imposing sanctions on Russia because of the situation in eastern Ukraine. Japanese Prime Minister Kishida called Russia’s actions in eastern Ukraine an unacceptable violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and international law.
Kishida will, among other things, ban the issuance of Russian bonds in Japan and freeze the assets of certain Russians. Some Russians are also banned from traveling to Japan. Japan will work out the plans in the coming days.
Australia is also imposing sanctions against Russia, Prime Minister Morrison announced. Eight high-ranking Russian politicians have been banned from entering and have been subject to financial penalties. The sanctions also affect Russian banks and transport and other companies operating in parts of Ukraine recognized by Russia as independent territories.
According to Morrison, Russia is prepared for an invasion of Ukraine that may take place within 24 hours. “We will oppose Russia. We will do so together with our partners and other like-minded people who believe that it is absolutely unacceptable for Russia to invade neighboring countries and take advantage of the threat of terrible violence.”
