A Ukrainian soldier has been killed in a shooting by pro-Russian militants in the Luhansk region, Pavlo Kovalchuk, an army spokesman, told AFP.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday recognized the independence of the so-called “people’s republics” of Donetsk and Lugansk, despite warnings from the West that such a move could lead to new sanctions.
As early as Monday night, Putin instructed the Ministry of Defense to ensure that the Russian armed forces “maintain peace” in the so-called “people’s republics” of Donbass. This decree means the official introduction of the Russian army into these already effectively occupied eastern territories of Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the Federation Council authorized Putin to use troops beyond the country’s borders.
