Exhibitors took advantage of Wine Paris to present new cuvées with assumed reliefs. On one side, a crocodile skin, on the other streaks to emphasize the duality.
C
duel of layers… it was through this nod to the method of resolving conflicts in earlier times that the Icard family presented its new brand of Bordeaux wines at Wine Paris. 3 Bordeaux cuvées (one white, 2 red) each vinified with two grape varieties “dueling” are found in this range “intended for wine fairs”explains Mathias Icard, vice-president sales and marketing of Icard châteaux et vignes.
Petit verdot-Malbec, Petit verdot-Cabernet-sauvignon and Sémillon-Colombard are the three duelists in the range offered by the Icard family which, if it knows how to stand out for its original approach, is also distinguished by its innovative packaging. The 360° label mirrors two fencers symbolizing the two varietals of the blend, but the bottle delivers a striated dimension reminiscent of the shape of the foil shell. “The bottle, named Zebra, is a 2022 novelty from glassmaker Saverglass. We use it to break the usual codes of Bordeaux, whether by its shape or its relief”, validates Mathias Icard. There is a bit of Soulage in the luminous reflection brought by the streaks of the glass of this Zebra bottle.
On the stand of the Languedoc merchant Joseph Castan, it is a less symmetrical bottle that attracts attention. With its crocodile skin relief, this bottle of the Crocodile Dandy cuvée is a direct reference to the emblematic animal of the city of Nîmes. “This bottle is the result of a reflection within the Costières de Nîmes appellation, but too committed to be chosen as a union bottle for the appellation”indicates Vianney Castan, head of the Languedoc house, “But I really liked the idea so I developed it and offered it to my export markets for Costières de Nîmes wines. They were seduced”.
Unlike the Icard family, Vianney Castan did not use an existing bottle in the glassmaker’s range (OI), “but we had to finance the creation of the mould. In return, we have the exclusivity ». The bottle will be present on the English and Dutch markets and seems to have been very popular in the spans of Wine Paris.
