Square Enix wants to make more HD-2D-style remakes of Live a Live

Square Enix should make more remakes of some of its Super Nintendo classics in the same “HD-2D” style of Live a Live. That’s what the producer calls the aesthetic of using 2D sprites in 3D scenarios, as in the recently announced remake for Live a Live.

Plans to make more remakes in this style appeared on Square Enix’s official YouTube channel, where some developers are working on Triangle Strategy talked about the art of the game. In the conversation, they confirmed that Square Enix president Yosuka Matsuda wants more games with “HD-2D” art.

“The president told us to use HD-2D more, so we decided to think about remakes of titles from the past.” – declared Tomoya Asano, one of the producers in the company. “So we sorted out possible titles and thought about which ones could be made in HD-2D, and brought them to the president.”

Square Enix’s boss then chose the Live a Live as the best candidate for revival in this art style, which is why we had his announcement recently.

But this could just be the beginning of more works like this, as the production company’s management wants to see the style being used more often.

The beginning of the popularization of this aesthetic in Square Enix games came with the success of Octopath Travelerwho already won ports fora do Switch. I know Triangle Strategy e Live a Live also get a good number of sales, we will certainly see more remakes and games in this style coming by the producer soon.
