Everyone knows Daniel Auteuil… on the big screen at least. Since his triumph in John of Florettein 1986, with a César, he is one of the most popular actors in French cinema.
At 72, he embarked on a new bet: the song. A dream that has always pursued him. It finally comes true with Déjeuner en l’air, a musical show to be seen at the Chartres theater on February 25th.
From Daniel Auteuil to Bénabar: stars to end the month in Eure-et-Loir
What made you want to start a singing career, at over 70 years old??
I have always sung, since childhood. My first shows were musicals. In my life, I have also done directing, directing. I have the same energy. I want to surprise myself and surprise others.

“In France, we are placed in boxes. And I don’t like it”
Singing is also acting??
There are commonalities. There are people, I have to tell a story. When you’re an actor, you have to know how to do everything: sing, but also dance, ride a horse, fencing… It’s part of the job. But in France, we are placed in boxes. And I don’t like it.

You have acted in very different films. There is a world between The adversary and The Under-Gifted.
It’s my nature. I may be hyperactive. I get bored quickly. There, I just acted in a drama film, Farewell Mr. Haffmannand I continue with a remake of the Toy, by Francis Veber. I go where the wind takes me.
“I sing my poetry accompanied by pop sounds”
To come back to your concert, the arrangements were entrusted to Gaëtan Roussel (ex-Louise Attaque). Was it the right person??
Yes, he has a very professional and rigorous look at my work. When I started, I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for. I had a reference: to transmit an emotion to the public. I sing my poetry accompanied by pop sounds. This is today’s music. I am accompanied on stage by two wonderful musicians.

You released two 45-all in the 80s. What is your retrospective view of this adventure??
I did this when I was 30 years old, I was driven by a strong desire. But my life has been taken away by the cinema. My parents were singers too, so maybe that blocked me a bit…
It’s a more intimate show too…
100 %. I give myself totally, because I don’t hide behind a role. Even if it’s true that to interpret a character, you have to draw from yourself. Otherwise, it does not work. Here it is different. You have to stop thinking and go for it.
premium Why the headliners of the shows do not fill up in Eure-et-Loir
Is that how you prepare your projects??
We think a lot upstream, of course. But then you have to let go. It’s so delicious and dizzying. It’s maddening, we’re almost empty, but the public catches up with you.
Do you feel stage fright??
Yes, it’s terrible, but it’s the pleasure that wins out. This life is all I wanted. Fear is that of disappointing. Will we be as good as the night before??
This is called a vocation.
Above all, it is a lot of work. I sometimes feel like a top athlete. I’m sure the Olympic skier knows his route well, but he still has stage fright when it comes time to set off. When, for two months, we relentlessly rehearse Deceits of Scapin to play in the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes at the Avignon Festival and that in the evening, there is a big mistral rising… so you have to play Shakespeare rather than Molière.

Do you feel like you’ve done your acting job?
No, it never does. When I play a play by Molière three hundred times in a row, it’s different each time. I have the impression of discovering the secrets of the text. But when it’s a lighter piece, I get a little more bored. Theater, I will perhaps do some more. But for now, I allow myself the freedom to do something different. What drives me now is poetry. When I was 14 or 15, I was carried away by the texts of Georges Brassens, Léo Ferré or Jean Ferrat. It is this emotion that I want to feel again.
