Storm Eunice has felled six monumental trees in Drenthe. The oldest and thickest green beech in Drenthe is one of them. The gigantic tree stood in a garden on Stapelerweg in the hamlet of De Stapel, near De Wijk. The tree in the driveway of the residents has now been sawn to pieces.

André Efftink of the Bomenwacht thinks it is a shame, but is somewhat relieved. “Had the storm been in October, if there were still leaves on the trees, the damage could not have been foreseen. I could not have foreseen two of these six, but they were trees that were already having problems. The green beech was already years in a decline phase and has now come to its own end.”

Monumental
In Drenthe there are 6,785 monumental trees, the Bomenwacht has 2,834 in maintenance. These are trees older than one hundred and fifty years, which are iconic and cultural-historically valuable.

The green beech has been cared for by the Bomenwacht since 1985 and was huge: a trunk with a diameter of 216 centimeters and the crown had a diameter of more than 20 meters. The tree has been there since about 1750 and was a defining feature of De Stapel hamlet.
