Russia may increase the quota of imported tomatoes from Turkey by 50,000 tons, according to reports.

The Russian Interfax news agency said the country could increase Turkey’s tomato import quota, which currently stands at 300,000 tons, to 350,000 tons.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture is preparing a new draft on importing tomatoes from Turkey, according to the report.

Turkey’s industry representatives have been arguing for a long time that the quota should be abolished altogether.

Turkey generated $363 million (TL 4.89 billion) in revenue from 623,000 tonnes of tomato exports in 2021. About half of such exports were to Russia.

Russia first imposed the quota in 2015 after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane that it said violated its airspace near the Syrian border. Moscow lifted the import ban in November 2017 as tensions between the two countries eased, particularly after the launch of the TurkStream pipeline that brings Russian gas to Turkey, but set limits.

Moscow initially increased the quota by 50,000 tons in February 2020 to 200,000 tons and then raised it to 250,000 tons in January last year. The Russian Ministry of Agriculture increased the quota by another 50,000 tons to 300,000 tons in April 2021.
