To the sound of the mariachi and “Caminos de Guanajuato”, the Mexican athlete of the moment, Donovan Carrillo, made his triumphant arrival in León, the land that for seven years has sheltered him on a long journey to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Accompanied by his coach “Goyo” Núñez, the skater was received by his parents, Mrs. Diana Suazo and Mr. Adolfo Carrillo, his three enthusiastic sisters and a large group of youngsters who, like Donovan, day by day forge their dreams about the Ice Center rink.
“It is a great joy, happy to be able to share with León now all that experience of having been in Beijing, seeing so many people I love, my family of course, the truth is that I am very happy”, said Carillo on his arrival in the leather capital.
The hubbub at the Bajío air terminal was total, Donovan’s presence did not go unnoticed, to such an extent that even security elements, airport personnel and passengers from the different flights approached him to ask for his autograph or the traditional ” selfie” of memory.
But without a doubt, the most emotional moment was the effusive hug between Carrillo and his parents, a postcard captured by the cameras of the media; In addition, there were also flowers, banners and presents, for which he is already the best figure skater in the history of the country, this just at his mere 22 years.
Guanajuato or Jalisco?
The offers are already on the table, the states of Guanajuato and Jalisco have entered the dispute over Donovan Carrillo, however, the athlete has currently proposed an alliance between both entities, all with the aim of not only supporting his project, but also promote and open more spaces for the practice of their sport.
“Thank both governors for presenting so much interest, for supporting me, for what we have in mind a lot of help will be needed and now we are going to take the two governors at their word and hopefully we will form a great alliance between both states”.
In this same sense, Carrillo Suazo added that “There is no doubt that talent in Mexico exists, but athletes must be supported since they are part of the seedbed to have more representatives of the country not only in winter sports, but also speaking of sports in general. We hope that all this contributes a lot so that my sport can have more vision and more growth”.
With an eye on Milan 2026
Convinced that the sky is the limit and dreams come true, the native of Zapopan said he was ready to start the new Milan-Cortina D’Ampezzo 2026 Olympic process.
“The work continues, we have even more goals, many projects and we will continue to grow and deliver better results. With the culmination of Beijing I am very happy and now motivated to look for a new cycle of four years and with my sights set on Milan, very cool things are coming that also excite me a lot”.
For now, this Monday Donovan and “Goyo” will return to the ice rink of illusions to prepare their participation in the World Championship of the specialty to be held next March in Montpellier, France.
