The internal struggles in the UDF and the party’s constant divisions erupted with renewed vigor less than a month before a national conference was convened to elect a new party chairman or re-elect the current Rumen Hristov. At the same time, the UDF is in parliament as GERB’s coalition partner for the first time since 2016 – then in the Reformist Bloc coalition, which he co-runs with Boyko Borissov’s party.

Doncho Zlatev, who introduces himself as the UDF’s youth leader, spoke about the split that began at the UDF National Council convened on February 18th in Karlovo. He sent a dramatic report on the Karlovo assembly in emails signed by the UDF Youth.
The whole drama took place around the exclusion from the UDF of 4 regional structures – Burgas, Kyustendil, Sliven and Razgrad. They were expelled because they did not pay their membership fees, the UDF leadership confirmed to 24 Chasa. For them, this was self-exclusion.
The excluded structures insisted that their membership be restored despite the delayed membership fee, the e-mail explained. Their position was defended by other participants in the meeting in Karlovo. Even
there was also a project

Former UDF Deputy Chairman and MP from the party Kostadin Markov from Burgas also called on the members of the National Assembly to oppose the violation of the UDF Statute and not to participate in the official victory of the conference by Rumen Hristov.
Hristov himself, who in 2018 even proposed the abolition of membership fees, was adamant that he could not return these structures, although they have brought some of the highest results of the UDF in local and parliamentary elections in recent years.says the letter, which brought to light the new internal dramas of the blue party.

Among the self-excluded are the mayor of Kyustendil Petar Paunov, the chairman of the municipal council in Dupnitsa Kostadin Kostadinov and five other municipal councilors of the UDF in Dupnitsa, the deputy head of the municipal council in Burgas Stanimir Apostolov, the municipal councilor and blue leader from Sliven Plamen Krumov – a total of more than 20 UDF municipal councilors and a large part of the party membership as a whole, the email said.
However, the youth organization on whose behalf the emails were sent has not existed for 15 years, the UDF leadership countered in a comment for “24 Chasa”. And according to them, what happened in Karlovo and the exclusion of the 4 regional organizations was a storm in a glass of water.
Representatives of these structures came, tried to make a scandal. They wanted ad hoc to pay their membership fees with an old date, which is unacceptable under the rules and statutes. This was not accepted, and it cannot be accepted. Thus, they are not de facto members of the UDF. Now they complain everywhere and write emails, commented to “24 Chasa” the general secretary of the party Iliya Lazarov.
According to him, an attempt was made to discredit the current leadership, because in a month there will be internal elections for a new one. Lazarov explained that
membership fees
of the UDF is BGN 1 each.

However, when members of a structure do not pay for a whole year, they are considered to have left the UDF, according to party rules.
This is the case in every organization. If you want to join the dog club, for dogs, if you do not pay your membership fee for a year, you are considered to have left the organization, added Lazarov.
The party’s statute still stipulates that “self-excluded” sesedars will be re-established in the district due to non-payment, but must re-apply for membership, he explained.
Doncho Zlatev, who poses as the UDF’s youth leader, is also among the “self-excluded”. For 4-5 years there has been an attempt to restore the youth UDF, and Zlatev led the group, which took on the task of reviving it.
“Unfortunately, they failed to gather enough people. In practice, there is only an initiative committee that has completed its work a long time ago, “said the Secretary General.
On March 12, the UDF will vote on a new leadership. Then the party meets at a national conference, which is mandatory up to 4 months after the parliamentary elections. According to the statute, there should have been one last year, but due to the frequent elections, the pandemic was postponed. So far, the only potential candidate for leader is the current Rumen Hristov. However, there are tensions against him in the ranks of the blue ranks because of the coalition with GERB, although thanks to this union the UDF returned to parliament.
