Jakarta –
Women with leukemia in the United States are believed to be the first women in the world to be ‘cured’ from infection with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). He also became the third human in the world to be cured by a stem cell transplant.
However, unlike the first two patients who recovered from HIV by transplanting stem cells from bone marrow, the US woman who was not named for privacy reasons is using a more advanced therapy, namely cord blood stem cells.
“This is the third report of a cure in a similar situation, and the first woman living with HIV,” said Sharon Lewin of the International AIDS Society.
Until now, 14 months since the transplant was carried out, the virus was no longer detected in the blood. Another good news, the therapy he underwent also triggered a ‘remission’ or recovered from his leukemia.
Some of the facts regarding this are summarized as follows:
1. Using stem cells
Experts believe that stem cell transplantation with umbilical cord blood is an attractive option with several advantages over bone marrow. Besides being considered more adaptive, stem cells from umbilical cord blood are also believed to be more accessible.
Another plus, umbilical cord blood stem cells also allow patients with blood type matches who are only partially able to receive transplants.
2. The third person is cured with similar treatment
The first and second humans to be cured of HIV thanks to stem cell transplants using stem cells from bone marrow. Each of them is ‘Berlin Patient’ Timothy Ray Brown who also has cancer, and Adam Castillejo or ‘London Patient’, also has cancer. Both received stem cells from HIV-resistant donors.
