Basketball: Franz Wagner wins the Rising Stars tournament with “Team Barry”.
Rookie Franz Wagner made the decision in the final of the Rising Stars tournament at the start of the all-star weekend of the professional basketball league NBA. With a free throw to 25:20, the 20-year-old from Orlando Magic in Cleveland/Ohio ended the show game between “Team Barry” and “Team Isiah” among young professionals.

Wagner thought the experience was “really cool”. It was great to “feel the energy in the arena and play with guys that I don’t usually play with.” In the few hours at the event, he was able to have “many conversations with many different people”.

Four teams competed in the challenge, with Wagner beating Gary Payton’s team 50-48 in the semifinals with selection of former NBA champion Rick Barry. While 50 points were needed to win in the first round, the final only went up to 25. The league thus honored its 75th anniversary.

As the last German to date, Wagner’s older brother Moritz (24) took part in the NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge in 2020. The Berliners are playing together for Orlando this season.

Ice hockey: Clear bankruptcy for Sturm and Minnesota
The German ice hockey professional Nico Sturm has suffered a home defeat with the Minnesota Wild in the NHL for the first time after six wins in a row. The Wild lost 2:6 (1:2, 0:1, 1:3) to the top team Florida Panthers on Friday evening (local time). Sturm remained without a goal in the fifth game in a row. Meanwhile, Florida’s Mason Marchment scored his first hat-trick in the NHL. Minnesota is second in the Central Division behind Western Conference champion Colorado Avalanche. Florida leads the Eastern Conference.

Jonathan Huberdeau set up two Panthers goals in the win and joined Edmonton Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid at the top of the league’s scoring list. All three currently have 68 points, with the German striker having the most goals in the league with 35 and Huberdeau having the most assists with 51.

When the Chicago Blackhawks lost 1-0 to the Dallas Stars after a penalty shoot-out, Lukas Reichel briefly played for the third time in the world’s best ice hockey league. A month after his last assignment, the 19-year-old from Nuremberg was called to the Blackhawks by the Rockford Icehogs farm team on game day. Reichel had 18 minutes on the ice and was also allowed to compete in the penalty shootout. There he failed to Stars goalie Jake Oettinger, who had previously saved all 34 shots on his goal in the game and recorded his first NHL shutout.
