Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The President of the United States (US) believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the decision to invade Ukraine.
“I’m sure he [Putin] already made a decision. We have reason to believe that,” Biden said in response to reporters’ questions at the White House.
The statement made by Biden on Friday local time is different. Some time ago, Biden admitted that he did not fully believe Russia had invaded Ukraine.
“We believe that Russian forces are planning and intending to attack Ukraine in the coming days,” Biden said.
Russia itself has stationed its troops on the Ukrainian border. Tensions in Ukraine have also escalated, following a shootout between Kyiv government forces and pro-Russian rebels.
Biden said he would not hesitate to impose tough sanctions on Russia if it invaded Ukraine. However, Washington remains hopeful that Putin changes his decision and makes room for diplomacy.
“The United States and our allies and partners will support the Ukrainian people. We will hold Russia accountable for its actions. […] We are ready to impose severe sanctions on Russia if it attacks further,” Biden said.
