(Elbil24): US traffic authorities have started an investigation of Tesla after a number of complaints about phantom braking.

Phantom braking means that the car makes an abrupt enumeration without any apparent explanation. Braking takes place automatically as a result of the car’s driver assistance and typical problem areas are under bridges and at the entrance and exit of tunnels.

The background is that, among other things, shadows trick the car into believing that an obstacle appears in the road. Phantom braking is experienced dramatically for the driver and passenger (s) in the car, who do not see braking coming.

At the same time, it can create dangerous situations because the phantom braking comes as a surprise to the road users behind – who then have to act lightning fast and brake abruptly.

354 complaints

In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that they have received 354 complaints of phantom braking from Tesla owners in the past nine months. It writes Automotive News.

In the last quarter, 100 complaints have been received, according to the Washington Post.

Common to the complaints is that the phantom braking often takes place in connection with the use of the advanced driver assistance system autopilot.

A total of 416,000 2021 and 2022 models of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y in the US will have this system, according to Automotive News.

Tesla owners report that “the vehicle unexpectedly applies the brakes while driving at highway speeds” when the autopilot’s features are in use. Adaptive cruise control is cited as an example.

Several owners are said to have expressed their concern to Tesla, but the electric car manufacturer is said to have rejected the complaints and claimed that the braking is normal.

According to NHTSA, the owner of an owner of the Tesla Model Y from 2021 must have experienced that the car made a sharp braking when the car had a speed of almost 130 km / h. “The braking was so violent that my head was thrown forward and I almost lost control of the car,” the Tesla owner wrote according to the report.

Encourages Norwegians to report

That Tesla customers complain about phantom braking is not a new phenomenon in Norway. In recent years, there have been several storms of complaints from Norwegian Tesla owners precisely because of the car’s unexpected sudden braking.

– There is no doubt that this is a real problem in Norway as well. We have received hundreds of complaints about phantom braking, says President Satheesh Varadharajan in Tesla Owners Club Norway to Elbil24.

They have a separate page where they inform Tesla customers about phantom braking. Here, customers can fill in a form where they share their experiences and provide details about the time, place and possible reason for the phantom braking.

– It has been a long time since we received the first complaints, and there are many who get involved, says Varadharajan.

Tesla Owners Club Norway writes the following on its website:

Cars with the latest hardware for self-driving (also called AP2 and newer (Autopilot generation 2 / 2.5 / 3), as well as cases of AP1), are constantly getting new and improved software, as the cars “experience” new things. They steer themselves, keep their distance from those in front, follow the blind spot and can also change lanes or take off from the main road on their own on some stretches. However, there are times when the car has slowed down, without any reasonable explanation. This can put a dent in both the driver and passenger, but most importantly; it can come as a great surprise to road users behind, who then have to brake abruptly.
