The Moerdijk Bridge (A16) in the direction of Breda was closed for hours on Friday. Just before four o’clock the first truck blew over, after which the road to Breda was closed. According to Rijkswaterstaat, salvage of the cars is not possible at the moment, the cars will be removed at a later time. “The appeal remains: if you don’t have to hit the road, don’t do it. And if you do go, be careful.”
On the A16 from Breda to Rotterdam, the right lane was also closed for hours. “We are also trying to open a lane in the other direction,” Rijkswaterstaat said. “Because the wind is blowing so hard, it was decided not to remove the trucks until later. That’s not possible now, so we can’t open all lanes.” At just after ten o’clock, all the trucks had been removed and the A16 was reopened.
According to the spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat, shipping in Brabant canals was also blocked, because the bridges cannot be operated safely. “There is too much pressure on it due to the wind, so you probably won’t be able to close it.”
