Fire has broken out on a ferry carrying hundreds of people between Greece and Italy. The passengers and crew managed to leave the ship in time, according to the Greek coast guard.
The ship departed from Igoumenitsa in western Greece early this morning for the Italian port city of Brindisi, about nine hours away. Already at the island of Corfu, a fire broke out at around 4.30 am.
The cause is unknown. An eyewitness says against the news site Proto Thema that he saw flames coming from a hold where trucks were lined up.
The Coast Guard reports that there were 237 passengers and 51 crew on board. They have been evacuated by lifeboats and taken to Corfu.
