Gianni Claeskens, one of the garbage collectors with whom Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever spent a night for the VTM program The Dirtiest Jobs in Flanders, ended up in hospital on Tuesday night after a work accident. The Antwerp resident was walking right next to the garbage truck when it had a blowout and was then thrown two meters away.

Gianni posted his remarkable story on Facebook. And that had not gone unnoticed by BDW, who in turn shared the message. “I just escaped something…”, De Wever is shocked. I wish my colleague of one night a speedy recovery and a happy birthday before Sunday!

The man suffered a bruised shoulder, but is otherwise doing well and has since returned home to recover. “That was a bit of a shock, such a huge bang. I had never experienced anything like this before,” said Claeskens.
