In Caen, they demand the securing of the place where their brother drowned

Olivier would have been 24 on January 31. It was on this day that his family launched a petition on the site change.org, to ask the town hall of Caen to secure the place where he would have fallen in the Orne, on July 11, before his body was found lifeless, five days later. They demand the installation of safety railings but also surveillance cameras.

“There are tables nearby where families often sit. There are also many young people who come here in the summer. But in the evening, there is absolutely no lighting, you can’t see anything. If for some reason someone still falls in the water, as the divers who responded to my brother’s disappearance explained to us themselves, there is very little chance of surviving place,” explains Émilie Louise, Olivier’s sister. “It’s true that I never go there again with my children because I find that these banks are not sufficiently secure”, abounds a signatory mother.

In response, the town hall ensures that it is thinking about strengthening the systems in place. “However, it is technically impossible to secure all the banks. Barriers have been installed at certain targeted locations. In addition, we have set up lifebuoys at regular intervals. But that means not being alone. And this is the first security: whatever the reasons, you must, as soon as you consider it necessary, not let someone go home alone. »

As for the request to install surveillance cameras, “it is not on the agenda. It would take a technician permanently to view the images and that is also impossible, ”continues the town hall. “In our story, they would have changed a lot of things,” says Émilie, Olivier’s sister. Even today, we do not have the slightest element on what could have happened to our brother. And I assure you that it is really hard to live with. This approach is therefore also an opportunity to relaunch an appeal to all those who may have the slightest element to send us on the day of the tragedy. »
