Madrid –
Real Madrid it’s a dramatic defeat at home Paris Saint Germain. Unfortunately, El Real’s defensive strategy has angered the club’s top brass.
Madrid visits the Parc des Princes, Wednesday (17/2/2022) early morning WIB, in the first leg Champions League round of 16. Madrid had to bow down sluggishly because they lost 0-1 through Kylian Mbappe’s goal in the 93rd minute aka the last minute!
The defeat was so stifling considering Madrid almost brought home a goalless draw, for the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on 9 March. But, if you look at the statistics, Madrid feels it deserves to lose.
How not, PSG played dominantly and made Madrid only last for 90 minutes. Statistics say, Madrid only released a total of three shots during 90 minutes without one leading to the target.
According to Opta, this is Madrid’s worst record in the Champions League since 2003/2004 and does not show the quality of a team that has won the competition 13 times. Meanwhile, PSG actually appeared violent by making 21 attempts, eight of which were on goal.
If Thibaut Courtois had not ruled out Lionel Messi’s penalty kick, Madrid could have lost more. Even though they still have a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals, Madrid cannot be separated from criticism because of their game.
Carlo Ancelotti as a coach chose to defend totally from the early minutes, even though he had players who could have been maximized to score goals. Moreover, Karim Benzema has been able to play after a month out.
It is this performance that then makes Madrid officials annoyed not playing. Quoted ESPNthey are reported to have informed Ancelotti and questioned the Italian coach’s decision to use a defensive strategy.
Not to mention, Dani Carvajal, who was relied upon, also played badly and several times could be passed by Mbappe. PSG’s penalty was also inseparable from Carvajal’s negligence in guarding Mbappe.
This defeat to PSG also raised other issues surrounding Ancelotti’s future at Madrid. If Madrid fail to win a trophy, boss Florentino Perez will sack him at the end of the season and eye Mauricio Pochettino or Jurgen Klopp as replacements.
Madrid’s burden to chase a one-goal deficit in the second leg Champions League round of 16 against PSG is getting tougher, because the two mainstays Casemiro and Ferland Mendy are absent due to card accumulation.
