The WHO is recording a further decline in new corona infections worldwide, as a new weekly report shows. A trend that is also continuing in this country: the seven-day incidence is falling for the fourth day in a row.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of new corona cases worldwide has fallen by almost a fifth in the past week. According to the UN organization in Geneva, around 16 million cases were reported between February 7 and 13 – 19 percent fewer than in the week before, as the WHO announced in its latest corona statistics.
The preliminary peak of the pandemic was reached in the last week of January with more than 22 million cases. After that, the numbers started falling in early February. Last week, fewer new cases were reported from almost all regions. Only in the Western Pacific region with East Asia and Oceania did the number increase.
However, the WHO not only reported a decline in corona cases, but also a steady increase in BA.2, a sub-variant of the omicron virus variant that can be transmitted even more quickly. BA.2 accounted for more than a fifth of all omicron cases analyzed worldwide in early February. BA.2 is on the rise in countries with both rising and falling omicron waves.
Seven-day incidence drops to 1401.0
The number of new corona cases is also declining in this country – for the fourth day in a row. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week on Wednesday morning as 1401.0. For comparison: the day before the value was 1437.5. A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 1450.8 (previous month: 515.7).
The health authorities in Germany reported 219,972 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. A week ago there were 234,250 infections.
However, the numbers are only of limited significance at the moment. Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data. Test capacities and health authorities are therefore at the limit in many places, and contacts are only tracked to a limited extent.
In addition, the number of people who no longer have their infection confirmed by a PCR test is likely to increase – the infection is therefore not included in the official statistics.
247 deaths
According to the new information, 247 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 272 deaths. The RKI has counted 12,800,315 infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.
The number of corona-infected patients who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 5.90 (Monday: 5.93) according to the RKI on Tuesday. These may also include people with a positive corona test who have another main illness. The RKI gave the number of recovered people on Wednesday as 9,153,100. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 120,467.
