They brought the noise outside Governor Hochul’s offices with a clear message for her and the state legislators.
“This is a Day of Democracy to ensure that Governor Hochul and state officials bring historic victories to our communities and to ensure that immigrant people of color can finally recover from this pandemic,” said Yaritza Méndez of Make the Road New York.
The dozens of members of the organization “Se Hace Camino Nueva York” and other allies in the fight for immigrant rights demanded this Tuesday:
- – Medical coverage for All
- – 3,000 million dollars for the Excluded Workers Fund
- – Permanent protection of tenants against eviction
- – La llamada Ley Solutions Not Suspensions
- – The Law to stop violence in sex trades
- – Expand universal child care among other measures.
As night fell, a much smaller group watched messages projected onto an iconic building in Union Square for the eyes of millions of New Yorkers.
Make The Road posted a message on social media with images of the projection of such messages and some of the protesters.
Despite the cold, our members were THRILLED to see our legislative priorities this year projected in Union Square.

“We were very sick from COVID, from omicron and we did not have support from the government and we are fighting for that cause and that they approve all those benefits that we require as migrants that we are… Oh, that they provide us with a medical service, that let us have all the resources and rights,” said Adriana Ramírez, a worker.
In the end, the impact will be seen in the numbers.
The state budget is $216 billion and most of this money is going elsewhere and workers are demanding that at least a portion of this amount go to our communities.
