The Germans are confirmed in the lead, while the group led by Carlos Tavares chases and first on commercial vehicles. Third position for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance
The head-to-head between Volkswagen and Stellantis for sales in Europe in 2021 saw, after a recount, the German group won first. According to updated data from Dataforce analysts, the Volkswagen group sold 3,158,559 vehicles last year, thus winning the top step of the podium. Stellantis follows closely, with 3,081,590 vehicles sold in the twelve months of 2021.

Commercial vehicles weigh
The result of the research was obtained considering the sales of cars and commercial vehicles under 3.5 tons in 31 countries of the Old Continent: 27 countries of the European Union with the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. The Volkswagen group thus confirms its leadership after it had recorded sales in Europe of 3,256,865 units in 2020, against the hypothetical 3,058,064 of Stellantis which saw the light only at the beginning of 2021.

The pursuers
Stellantis has focused on commercial vehicles to keep the race tight. The Italian-French-American group delivered 643,793 light commercial vehicles and 2,437,797 cars, while Volkswagen’s trucks and vans were 208,303 against 2,950,256 cars. The remaining ranking sees the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance in third place with 1,788,266 units between cars and commercial vehicles, fourth position for Hyundai-Kia which has been able to manage the chip crisis better than others with 1,020,686 vehicles and fifth Ford with 886,812 examples.
