7 Ways to Overcome a Congested Nose

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Nasal congestion become one of the symptoms that can be found in patients with Covid-19 varian Omicron. Here’s how to deal with a stuffy nose.

Nasal congestion can be very annoying because it makes it difficult for the sufferer to breathe through the nose.

When a stuffy nose can’t breathe oxygen, you can’t help but rely on your mouth to breathe. In fact, if you breathe too long through your mouth it is not good for health.

Besides causing the mouth to become dry, the mouth is not designed to breathe. The mouth does not have the protection to filter dirty air, dust full of bacteria, and germs, just like the nose.

In order to be able to breathe normally again, know how to deal with nasal congestion as follows.

1. Take a warm bath

Taking a hot shower can help relieve nasal congestion. But the water temperature should not be too high, OK?

Try to close the bathroom door so that moisture can collect. When the moisture is enough, take deep breaths to clear the sinuses.

The steam produced from the hot water can reduce mucus production so that the nose can breathe normally again.

Although the hot steam does not last long, this method can be used as an alternative solution for temporary relief.

2. Pay attention to the room temperature

Being in a room with a warm and humid air temperature is also one of the most effective ways to deal with a stuffy nose. The reason is, this can relieve inflammation and relieve swelling of the blood vessels in the nose.

The easiest way to do this is to avoid a room with a very cold temperature or turn on an air humidifier. Humidifiers increase oxygen ions and water content in the air.

While they don’t provide consistent benefits in treating nasal congestion, they do make breathing easier. No wonder this air humidifier is used for people with asthma or respiratory infections.

Dry air can irritate the throat and nasal passages. If the air in the room is too dry, a humidifier can help. You should clean it regularly to avoid the emergence of other allergies due to the growth of bacteria and fungi.

3. Apply eucalyptus oil

Eucalyptus oil, ointment, or balm can be a powerful weapon to treat a stuffy nose. Apply eucalyptus oil to the surface of the nostrils so that you can continue to inhale the aroma.

If needed, also apply on the chest so that the body becomes warm and more comfortable.

Eucalyptus oil or eucalyptus oil made from eucalyptus leaves has been used for thousands of years as medicine. Eucalyptus oil can kill the bacteria that cause sinus infections and gradually relieve inflammation of the blood vessels.

4. Drink more

When you have a severe cold, the mucus will thicken and clog your nose. To overcome this, multiply body fluids by drinking warm water.

Warm water can help loosen mucus in the airways, reducing pressure in the sinuses.

When the pressure is reduced, the inflammation and pain from a stuffy nose will decrease.

If you’re not used to drinking warm water, try drinking a mixture of ginger and mint tea, apple cider vinegar, or warm lemon and honey tea, which contains natural antiseptics and decongestants to soothe your breath.

In addition, tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that are good for clearing the nasal passages.

5. Gargle with warm salt water

Gargling with salt water can moisten a sore and itchy throat when you have a stuffy nose and provide temporary relief to the airways.

Try dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in 200 ml of warm water, gargle and do this four times a day.

6. Breathe in the warm steam

In addition to taking a warm bath, you can also place your face in a basin of warm water and start breathing in the steam.

7. Lie down with a fairly high pillow

Nasal congestion often occurs during sleep at night. So, it’s best when you sleep using a pillow that is slightly higher, so that the mucus in your nose can still flow into your throat.

After knowing how to deal with a stuffy nose, check and consult a doctor if it is accompanied by other symptoms and does not subside.
