The shortage of teachers at Herner elementary schools is getting worse and worse. The last two rounds of recruitment were anything but successful for the Herner elementary schools. Only 12 new hires followed 35 job advertisements. Things are going similarly or even worse in other Ruhr area municipalities. Trendy cities like Münster or Bonn don’t have these problems. Herne’s head of school, Andreas Merkendorf, is now demanding that young teachers be assigned to schools. This is the only way to achieve an even distribution of teachers at the country’s primary schools. And that is a basic requirement for educational equity among the little ones.
