Ustaz Khalid Basalamah is currently in the public spotlight. This is because of his statement about wayang.
In one of his talk videos that went viral and was widely discussed, Ustaz Khalid Basalamah mentioned that movies should be removed because they are not in accordance with Islamic teachings.
Suddenly a statement Ustaz Khalid Basalamah it became controversial. This is because wayang is one of the cultural heritages in Indonesia. Even today, wayang shows are still often held and get great attention from the public.
This made Sujiwo Tejo, who is a humanist, asked for a response regarding Ustaz Khalid Basalamah’s statement. Sujiwo Tejo admitted that he was reluctant to respond to the ban on puppets.
“I’ve been asked a lot of questions about the fact that wayang must be destroyed because it’s haram. No one I respondi,” said Sujiwo, quoted from his Twitter.
But Sujiwo Tejo Instead, it gives a religious analogy such as formal education which consists of several semesters. According to Sujiwo Tejo, those whose religious studies are in their doctoral semester should not respond to people who are still in the early semesters.
“Because religion also has semesters. People whose religion is in doctoral semesters, should not respond to people whose religion is in the TPB semester (first level together),” he said.
Regarding the statement about deletion puppetSujiwo Tejo relates this problem by erasing his own shadow.
“1) Those who want to delete the puppets/shadows, please delete the shadows themselves. The beginning was dark. Then all things began to appear thanks to the light. That light is reason/knowledge. And every light will cast a shadow. That’s why wayang always talk about things that don’t make sense/mystery,” he said.
“2) My painting ‘Pangeling-eling Semar to Pamong Nagari’ is black and white oil on canvas 90×120 cm2. Semar among the various houses of worship. Not real. If it’s real, it’s no longer a puppet but knowledge. Not a shadow/puppet anymore, but a light #CryptoSemar,” continued Sujiwo Tejo.
Previously, Ustaz Basalamah had revealed that wayang playing was prohibited in Islamic teachings. Even so, Ustaz Khalid said that art can be remembered as a cultural tradition left by our ancestors.
“If this (puppet) is a legacy from our ancestors, maybe we can remember first, oh this is the tradition of the ancients like this. But that doesn’t mean it has to be done while Islam is forbidden. We should leave it,” explained Ustaz Khalid Basalamah.
Ustaz Khalid Basalamah also asked the puppet owners to destroy the collection.
“If it’s a matter of repentance, yes, repentance is naasuha. And if he has (puppet) it is better to destroy it, in the sense of eliminating the word,” he concluded.
