Cultural history of artificial intelligence

Coordination : Alexandre Gefen (CNRS, UMR 7172)

The importance taken by AI requires understanding it not only as a set of algorithms, but also as a “technoculture”, where the sciences involved (mathematics, information sciences and cognitive sciences) are registered in institutions configuring scientific practices, but also in situated cultural contexts and in imaginaries involving ideologies, fictions, sensitive representations. This GdT will be part of the ANR CulturIA project to propose a global and integrated history of AI, in the tradition of the history of ideas and the cultural history of science.

Alexandre Gefen, research director at the CNRS, is a historian of ideas and literature. He is the author of numerous articles and essays relating in particular to culture, contemporary literature and literary theory. He was one of the pioneers of Digital Humanities in France. After a research program devoted to artificial intelligence fictionhe is PI of the ANR CulturIA project, for a cultural history of AI.

This working group was created in 2021.
