Borussia Dortmund looks like the loser in Frankfurt for a long time. Again, BVB makes serious mistakes in defense. But then the morale is right. Two late goals make Dortmund cheer.
Bayern pursuers Borussia Dortmund averted the false start in the second half of the Bundesliga in a crazy final phase. Thanks in particular to the late goals from Jude Bellingham (87th) and Mahmoud Dahoud (89th), BVB came 3-2 (0-2) at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday evening after being 2-0 down. The gap to the record champions from Munich is now only six points. Bayern lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday evening (1-2).
“We had a great, emotional victory,” said defense chief Mats Hummels on Sky, but warned: “We constantly concede goals from situations from which no goals should be scored.” That happens “far too often, this stability is what we have to take up the cause if we want to achieve something”.
Rafael Borré initially gave Eintracht the lead with a brace (16th/24th minute). After the goal by Thorgan Hazard (71st), BVB pushed for more goals – and rewarded themselves. The hope of license player boss Sebastian Kehl to “restart” after the weak end of the year 2021 was fulfilled. As coach, Frankfurt’s Oliver Glasner narrowly missed the first win in the sixth duel against Dortmund.

The BVB pros put a lot of pressure on from the first minute and would have taken the hosts by surprise if Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp hadn’t deflected a shot from Thomas Meunier to the right post in a world-class manner (2′). Dortmund dominated the game for a good quarter of an hour before Eintracht took the first chance: After a free kick from Filip Kostic, Borré scored the lead from close range with a stretched leg, although BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel didn’t look very happy.
The goal conceded the guests completely, suddenly nothing went together with the Champions League starter. On the other hand, the goal gave Eintracht an enormous boost, who now dominated the completely insecure Borussia and made it 2-0 thanks to Borré’s sixth goal of the season. Again Kostic had done the preliminary work with a hard pass in the middle.
Things could have gotten worse for BVB after that, when Evan N’Dicka put the ball on the post (29′) and Jesper Lindström only hit the side netting after a solo (34′). The Dane was unexpectedly in the starting XI after testing positive for the coronavirus on Thursday. A retest reversed the result.
In injury time in the first half, Borussia had the chance to score. After a header from Mats Hummels, which Trapp fended off brilliantly, Donyell Malen only hit the post in the follow-up shot. In the second round, Dortmund recovered and increasingly pushed the hosts onto the defensive.
Hazard rewarded the effort to get the goal back. After a pass from exceptional striker Erling Haaland, who posed little danger overall, Hazard tunneled Eintracht goalkeeper Trapp with a low shot. Bellingham and Dahoud put on the crown in the closing stages of the comeback.
