Lew York City kicks off 2022 with a new mayor. On Friday night, former African-American police officer Eric Adams was sworn in on the Bible in Times Square as thousands of revelers gathered in the iconic Manhattan plaza to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Aged 61, Mr. Adams is the second black mayor in New York City history. He succeeds Bill de Blasio and becomes the Big Apple’s 110th mayor.

Eric Adams was elected on November 2 for his program to fight against crime and socio-economic inequalities in this megalopolis of around nine million inhabitants.

In recent years, Eric Adams ran the Brooklyn borough.

His first challenge will be to stem the coronavirus pandemic as New York is once again hit by Covid-19. In addition, the elected Democrat will have to tackle the economic recovery of the metropolis. Finally, as a former police officer, he will also be scrutinized on how he pursues police reform.
