Italy begins sales process of successor Alitalia

It has not yet been announced how exactly everything will be arranged. This can be done through a bidding procedure or through a direct sale. According to Finance Minister Daniele Franco, the government will initially keep a minority stake, which can be sold at a later stage.

ITA, which has only been flying since October, is now still in the hands of the state. The new airline has taken over about a quarter of the staff and some of the aircraft from the old Alitalia. The number of routes has also been cut considerably.

It is not yet clear whether ITA will actually go to the two interested parties. There may be even more takeover candidates. ITA chairman Alfredo Altavilla has already said he would like to become part of Lufthansa. The Germans previously tried to work with Alitalia, but that attempt failed in early 2020. The Italian airline then went under after years of losses.
