Is GERD Included in the Omicron Variant Comorbid Covid-19?

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Patient Covid-19 may experience complications due to the comorbidities they suffer. Comorbid This can make Covid-19 symptoms worse and even lead to death.

There are several health problems that are included in the list of comorbid Covid-19, such as hypertension, heart disease, and high blood sugar. Then what about Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)? Is GERD comorbid for the Omicron variant of Covid-19?

Gastroenterology Specialist FKUI RSCM Ari Fahrial Syam said GERD was not a comorbid Covid-19. Patients who have GERD are not at risk of worsening when exposed to Covid-19.

“It’s different from hypertension, autoimmune or elderly. GERD does not pose a risk to Omicron,” said Ari in a virtual media briefing with the theme ‘Is it true that GERD is not life-threatening: a new hope to improve healing and prevent GERD recurrence’, Thursday (10/2).

Although not a comorbid, GERD can attack someone who is exposed to Covid-19. This risk can be experienced by anyone who has Covid-19 even though when he was healthy he was never diagnosed with GERD.

“Generally, when we are exposed to Covid-19, we are stressed, then the brain tells the stomach to produce excess acid, rising is stomach acid, it can be GERD. But again GERD is not a comorbid,” said Ari.

Ari explained that GERD is a curable disease. Cure for GERD is relatively easy as long as the person leads a healthy lifestyle and eats a nutritious diet.

Ari reminded to eat fish and chicken meat instead of red meat. This is because red meat is high in saturated fat and can increase the risk of developing GERD.

“I always recommend to patients to eat fish, don’t eat steak, just eat grilled fish. It’s tastier and healthier,” he said.
